The studies (both analytical and empirical) conclude that humans are predisposed to believe in God and an afterlife, and that both theology and atheism are reasoned
responses to what is a basic impulse of the human mind, a university release said.

The researchers point out that the project was not setting out to prove the existence of God or otherwise, but sought to find out whether concepts such as Gods and an afterlife appear to be entirely taught or basic expressions of
human nature.

'The Cognition, Religion and Theology Project' led by Dr Justin Barrett, from the Centre for Anthropology and Mind at Oxford University, drew on research from a range of disciplines, including anthropology, psychology, philosophy,
and theology.

They directed an international body of researchers conducting studies in 20 different countries that represented both traditionally religious and atheist societies.

The findings are due to be published in two separate books by psychologist Dr Barrett in Cognitive Science, Religion and Theology and Born Believers: The Science of Childhood Religion.

The studies by Emily Reed Burdett and Justin Barrett suggest that children below the age of five find it easier to believe in some superhuman properties than to understand similar human limitations. Children were asked whether their mother would know the contents of a box in which she could not see.

Children aged three believed that their mother and God would always know the contents, but by the age of four, children start to understand that their mothers are not all-seeing and all knowing.

However, children may continue to believe in all-seeing, all-knowing supernatural agents, such as a God or Gods. Experiments involving adults, conducted by Jing Zhu from Tsinghua University (China), and Natalie Emmons and Jesse Bering from The Queen's University, Belfast, suggest that people across many different cultures instinctively believe that some part of their mind, soul or spirit lives on after-death.

The studies demonstrate that people are natural 'dualists' finding it easy to conceive of the separation of the mind and the body.

Project Director Dr Justin Barrett, from the University of Oxford's Centre for Anthropology and Mind, said: "This project does not set out to prove God or Gods
exist. Just because we find it easier to think in a particular way does not mean that it is true in fact. If we look at why religious beliefs and practices persist in societies across the world, we conclude that individuals bound by religious ties might be more likely to cooperate as societies.

"Interestingly, we found that religion is less likely to thrive in populations living in cities in developed nations where there is already a strong social support network."

Project Co-Director Professor Roger Trigg, from the University of Oxford's Ian Ramsey Centre, said: "This project suggests that religion is not just something for a peculiar few to do on Sundays instead of playing golf. We have gathered
a body of evidence that suggests that religion is a common fact of human nature across different societies.

"This suggests that attempts to suppress religion are likely to be short-lived as human thought seems to be rooted to religious concepts, such as the existence of supernatural agents or Gods, and the possibility of an afterlife or
pre-life."

CITED FROM AN ARTICLE FROM THE TIMES OF INDIA (13MAY2011)faisalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01614431863249271889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5997419275298806923.post-25631961799909513252011-05-12T20:03:26.211+05:302011-05-12T20:03:26.211+05:30>>ചുമ്മാ അധികാര വര്ഗ്ഗം കെട്ടിച്ചമച്ച കഥ മറ...>>ചുമ്മാ അധികാര വര്ഗ്ഗം കെട്ടിച്ചമച്ച കഥ മറ്റുള്ളവര് വിശ്വസിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയ അസംബന്ധങ്ങള് പോരാ

What you suggest is that 'spandrel ...So bright,
What you suggest is that 'spandrel is an 'inevitable consequence' to the way in which human brain has evolved and still evolves.

Also, 'Having a normal brain doesn't imply that you have religion(with all its specific details.). All it implies is that you can acquire it'.

So religion is acquired, more especially as a side effect as you have put it. So if side- effects can be minimized or even avoided so can religion too. What is needed is right knowledge and realisation.

That is right education, can eliminate bad religion. If so, the opposite can also be true.

That is one can instill wrong notion in others. A religious cantered-god is the best contrivance for that. In his attributes as the absolute power figure, the protector and the father-image, the universal lover etc., he is the best filler for the ‘spandrel’ in human mind.

But what is the motivation for creating such a god? Or who are benefiting out of that, through driving the majority to be passive believers, to get consoled in the hope that heaven is awaiting them after this life and to a blind belief in a God whose existence is a big question? Here you may get the answer to the avarna- savarna hierarchy.

Well, that is not a genetic rational to the creation of god but only a socio-political one. But as time moves on, doesn’t the socio-political ones take a genetic nature?

Well, I wrote, what I think is relevant. Bright, your post is very inspiring.Prasanna Raghavanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15639197236363469260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5997419275298806923.post-38180462121871937422011-05-06T19:14:49.950+05:302011-05-06T19:14:49.950+05:30Bright, thanks for your responses. If they have seen the truth earlier, what makes them change their mind later? If it is a case of damage to their general purpose 'belief engine,' due to old age, remember that they don't turn into fools that believe in any outrageous things.Even a skeptic turned believer won't start believing in tooth fairies or santa claus.

So that belief thing or whatever, may not be a general purpose one.brighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06076444687749940392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5997419275298806923.post-48463529378990047002011-05-06T02:35:58.307+05:302011-05-06T02:35:58.307+05:30Bright, the crux of my argument is that evolution ...Bright, the crux of my argument is that evolution has prepared us to "Trust first and then verify" instead of "Verify first and then trust".

The usual argument that we hear in the media is that "Human beings are designed/evolved to believe in God". But my argument is that we are designed/evolved to JUST believe. We will stop believing only if we can find proof to the contrary or such beliefs are clearly bad for us. That is why a mother can make a child to believe "not to touch a burning lamp", but the opposite is difficult.

We once believed that the Earth is flat. But when we found sufficient proof for a round Earth, we have changed our belief.

Since no body has ever produced any evidence to the non-existance of God, we continue to believe in God. And when you think about it, a belief in God does not pose us any immediate/clear danger.യാത്രികന്https://www.blogger.com/profile/15840180197757053925noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5997419275298806923.post-23462910371818311702011-05-06T01:14:17.390+05:302011-05-06T01:14:17.390+05:30Are you watching Human Behavioral Biology webcast ...Are you watching Human Behavioral Biology webcast from Stanford?
